Scrap Squad

Project

”Scrap Squad” is a participatory visual communication system that transforms recycling education through play, creativity, and active participation. Although recycling is one of the first sustainable habits taught in schools, most waste sorting systems are designed for adults, relying on text, abstract symbols, and inconsistent labels that young children often struggle to understand.

The project was developed through research at Elementary School Simon Jenko in Kranj, combining interviews with teachers, analysis of students' daily routines and classroom waste, and research into environmental education, children's literacy, and visual communication. Instead of explaining waste through illustrations, Scrap Squad transforms discarded materials into expressive collage characters, enabling children to recognise materials before learning recycling categories.

The project goes beyond mere labelling. Through participatory workshops, children create their own “Scrapers” from waste materials, becoming co-creators of the system rather than passive users. Through making, playing, and exploring, they develop a deeper understanding of materiality, strengthen their knowledge of recycling, and gain confidence in their ability to actively contribute to solving ecological challenges.

Designed as an accessible and adaptable system, ”Scrap Squad” can be implemented in various educational settings, demonstrating how thoughtful visual communication can transform everyday recycling into meaningful environmental education.

Author

Gaja Bumbar is a designer, illustrator and visual communicator from Kranj, Slovenia. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design at the University of Ljubljana. Her work explores how design can create meaningful experiences that leave a lasting impression on those who interact with them.

She is particularly interested in participatory and interaction design, developing systems that encourage engagement rather than passive observation. Whether working on projects for children, digital games, culinary experiences or educational environments, she aims to transform everyday interactions through storytelling, gamification and visual communication.

Her practice combines research, illustration and user-centred design to create intuitive, emotionally engaging and socially meaningful experiences. She believes that successful design enables people to become active participants, encouraging curiosity, confidence and a sense of ownership.

Her work has received several awards, including Best of Show (Student) at Europe Poster Stellars and a Silver Award at the US International Poster Biennial (USIPB), as well as finalist selection at the World Biennial of Student Posters in Novi Sad. Through her projects, she explores how thoughtful design can inspire positive behavioural change and contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive future.
