Fortresses – The Fate of a City

Project
The scholarly book “Fortifications: The Fate of a City” draws attention to Pula’s overlooked fortification system and presents a rich body of museum and archival material documenting its development and significance. The diversity of the content informed a design that emphasises the publication’s layered structure.
The book is conceived as the official folder of a naval officer. Its binding is inspired by historic archival files, while kraft-paper covers, metal rings and binding cord reinforce the impression of a functional working document. Pages of different formats and tones create a dynamic structure resembling an archival folder, while dividers made from heavier paper improve navigation and organise the content.
Designed for active use, the publication gradually acquires the character of a personal archival file through handling and the passage of time.
