The “Tablì” project introduces an innovative approach to single-serve coffee preparation. While capsule systems offer convenience and consistent quality, they also generate a considerable amount of waste. As an alternative, Lavazza developed a capsule-free system based on a tab made from 100% ground coffee, without aluminium, plastic or additional coatings.

The machine, coffee tab and packaging were designed as a unified system combining convenience, quality and a more sustainable method of preparation. The machine’s clean, contemporary form reflects the innovative nature of the concept, while interaction remains simple and intuitive: a fluid movement opens the insertion area, the tab is placed inside and brewing begins automatically.

Sustainability guided the development process. The tabs contain only coffee and can be disposed of as organic waste, while the packaging and inner trays are made from cardboard and moulded paper pulp. The machine is designed to be repairable and uses post-consumer recycled plastic wherever possible. Particular attention was also given to energy consumption and noise reduction.

“Tablì” offers a complete, sensory and design-led experience as an alternative to conventional capsule systems.
