The project “Marija Jurić Zagorka Book Cover Series” develops a distinctive visual identity for a series of book covers for novels by Marija Jurić Zagorka: “Grička vještica”, “Kći Lotrščaka” and “Vitez slavonske ravni”. Rather than directly illustrating the literary content, each title is reinterpreted through typography, composition and symbolic structures derived from its narrative.

The series is built around a conceptual framework inspired by tarot, using archetypal forms and ornamental codes as generative design elements rather than merely decorative references. Narrative motifs from each novel are translated into variations of composition, rhythm, density and symbolic articulation. This allows each cover to establish its own atmosphere while remaining part of a coherent visual language.

The cover for “Grička vještica” adopts a darker, more enclosed visual structure that reflects the novel’s mysterious character. “Kći Lotrščaka” draws inspiration from the historical and architectural identity of Zagreb, while “Vitez slavonske ravni” expands into a more open composition shaped by landscape and regional context. Throughout the series, typography and graphic elements act as key carriers of meaning.
The project reinterprets one of the most significant legacies of Croatian literature through a contemporary visual system in which meaning emerges from the relationship between symbol, text and form.
