The project “Generating Characters from Children’s Drawings Using a Local AI Application” is an interactive installation and educational demonstration intended for primary school pupils in the lower grades. It was developed and implemented for the popular science programme #SciHill and the MULTISTEM project, with the aim of making artificial intelligence technologies more accessible and less intimidating through play and creativity.

Users are invited to draw the basic outline of an imaginary monster on a graphic tablet, after which a locally run Stable Diffusion model generates detailed textures and three-dimensional elements within a few seconds. In this way, the application produces an illustration that respects the child’s original idea while further developing it visually.

The system automatically saves three key files: the generated character on a background, the character with a transparent background, and the original child’s drawing. To provide children with a tangible memory of their creative and technological experiment, the generated character is immediately printed in colour in a 15 × 10 cm format, while the results are displayed in real time in a separate window on a secondary monitor. This shared gallery of works, intended for groups of 15 to 30 pupils, encourages a collaborative atmosphere and enables immediate reflection on the relationship between children’s analogue creativity and contemporary digital tools.
