The project “Photo Tarot Cards” develops original interpretations of tarot cards. Following additional research and in consultation with mentor Professor Luka Borčić and colleague and assistant Irma Matan, it was decided to create two cards: “The Devil” and “The Empress”.

The central themes of the project are feminism, freedom, defeat, struggle, wealth, community, and the symbiosis of flora and fauna. Photography was used for the visual interpretation, while the backgrounds of the cards were enriched with illustration. The motif of the grey rectangle was introduced as a symbol of alternative life choices in contrast to prescribed realities.

“The Devil” card depicts a couple unable to recognise the healthier world outside. They are bound to a tree, a symbol of value, and held there by loose chains, objects of addiction, and their stripped-back toxic relationship. “The Empress” card depicts women dancing in a circle, symbolising togetherness and female solidarity. The women בתוך grey rectangles refer to the position of women in a patriarchal world and emphasise their strength and success. The background of the cards is stylistically connected to the front side, while also representing an all-seeing eye that distinguishes the true meaning of emotions from the subconscious.
The project emerged from reflections on social issues in the surrounding environment, based on the idea that tarot connects human decisions with their reflection in nature and in the ways they shape the urban world.
