Locations
MUO Gallery is a new exhibition space of the Museum of Arts and Crafts, opened in June 2025 at Ilica 163a to mark the Museum’s 145th anniversary. Established while the Museum’s main building is undergoing renovation, it provides a new point of presence in the city, creating opportunities for encounters with audiences and connecting historical heritage with contemporary art and design.
The Gallery opened with “Museum in a Nutshell”, an exhibition presenting selected objects from the Museum’s 22 collections and offering a glimpse into a collection of more than 100,000 works of fine and applied arts and design. The space was conceived for exhibitions, lectures, presentations, educational programmes and other forms of direct public engagement, with a particular focus on building connections with the surrounding Črnomerec neighbourhood and its community.
In its first year alone, MUO Gallery presented 13 exhibitions and more than 80 events, attracting almost 6,000 visitors and establishing itself as an active platform for art, design, heritage and contemporary social issues.
Program
The exhibition “The Sound of the Poster” explores the unusual relationship between image and sound, asking how a visual medium can evoke a whisper, rhythm, music or even an explosion. From the modernist rhythms of the machine age, Futurist energy and Dadaist typographic experiments to contemporary design approaches, posters translate sound into image.
Based on the idea that posters are not silent images, the exhibition brings together works from the collection of the Museum of Arts and Crafts that communicate sound through colour, composition, typography and rhythm. Some are directly connected to music and concerts, while others evoke the noise of the city, movement, voice or silence, or interpret the sound of interaction with an object. The exhibition includes works by Ivan Picelj, Boris Bućan, Juraj Dobrović, Ratko Petrić and Krešimir Bauer, among others.
For the exhibition, MUO also invited Ivana Borovnjak, Studio đkć and Studio Kuna zlatica to interpret the theme through new screen-printed posters. Particular attention is given to typography as a carrier of rhythm and intonation, and to the way the viewer’s gaze moves across the poster almost like listening to a musical composition.
“The Sound of the Poster” invites visitors to experience posters not only with their eyes, but also through imagination, discovering their ability to transform silence into sound.
