Locations
The Bernardo Bernardi Gallery has operated since 1999 within the Zagreb Open University, in its modernist complex at Ulica grada Vukovara 68. The gallery is named after Bernardo Bernardi, one of Croatia’s most important 20th-century architects and designers, who designed the building’s original interiors and furniture.
Since 2013, the Gallery has continuously developed a programme dedicated to contemporary design. It presents established practitioners, younger and mid-career designers, student work, and curatorial and research projects spanning industrial and graphic design, fashion, textiles, spatial practices and interaction design. Particular emphasis is placed on projects that approach design as a creative, social and cultural practice while encouraging interdisciplinary research and new approaches to the discipline.
Connecting the history of Croatian design with contemporary practice, the Bernardo Bernardi Gallery serves as a space for exhibition, research and critical reflection on the role of design in contemporary society.
Program
Ivana Biočina’s exhibition at the Bernardo Bernardi Gallery explores sustainable fashion through natural materials, dyeing processes, handcraft and the renewal of forgotten connections between textiles, the body and nature.
Approaching textiles as materials that carry traces of the environment, labour and time, the programme raises questions about how clothing is produced, used and valued. The focus is on slower and more conscious processes of making, materiality and the knowledge embodied in handcraft, as well as on reconnecting with natural sources of fibres and dyes.
The exhibition considers fashion beyond the logic of passing trends, presenting it as a field of research, culture and everyday practice through which more responsible relationships with materials, the body and the environment can be developed.
