The Croatian Designers Association (HDD) is the central professional association for designers in Croatia, dedicated to creating a stimulating environment for the development of design, raising public awareness of its importance, and connecting design with the economic and cultural sectors, public institutions and citizens. Through an intensive programme of exhibitions, education and public events in Zagreb, across Croatia and internationally, HDD has established itself as one of the most active and influential organisations on the Croatian cultural scene.

HDD Gallery, launched in 2009, is today one of the most dynamic exhibition spaces in Croatia and the only gallery in the country systematically dedicated to design, its continuous presentation and critical examination. Exhibitions produced by the Gallery regularly travel to other prominent venues in Croatia and abroad.

The Gallery’s programme is developed through several curatorial strands addressing contemporary design, cultural and artistic practices, as well as exhibition methodologies of particular interest to the institution. Its emphasis is on research, interdisciplinarity and the cultural, social and political dimensions of design. These programmes include “Design from Another Perspective”, “Designing History: Historicising Design”, “Discursive Objects”, “Case Studies” and “In the First Person”.

Program

The exhibition “To Be Found” presents young designer and Radiona Vjesnik co-founder Jakov Habjan, with a particular focus on his interest in the intersections of craft, DIY culture and industrial design.

One of the recurring strands of his practice is the collection, recycling and upcycling of found objects, many of which were originally designed products. Developed in the lead-up to the exhibition, the project reveals a creative process based on play and dialogue with discarded objects found in the urban environment.

Many of these objects carry traces of the region’s industrial and design heritage, whether produced by companies such as Jugokeramika and Meblo or aesthetically connected to that legacy. Habjan returns them to a new but related context by transforming them into lighting objects, combining found forms with newly created elements.

The project examines the relationship between the discarded and the valuable, industrial heritage and contemporary authorship, demonstrating how design can extend the life of objects through reinterpretation, intervention and new use.
