Sahara Soul

Project

The “Sahara Soul” project comprises a series of sustainable packaging designs for traditional Moroccan spices: turmeric, cayenne pepper and cumin. It explores the relationship between design, nature and culture, drawing on the Moroccan tradition in which spices symbolise identity, trade and a connection to nature. The story of spices is translated into a contemporary packaging design that combines functionality, sustainability and user experience.

Each package is made from handmade recycled paper embedded with plant seeds. After use, it can be torn, soaked and planted, allowing it to continue its life cycle instead of becoming waste. In this way, the packaging goes beyond its protective role and becomes a medium that encourages a more responsible relationship with the environment.

The project’s authenticity stems from the material itself. The paper is hand-dyed using natural pigments derived from the spices it contains, creating the distinctive tones of turmeric, cayenne pepper and cumin. By retaining their natural scents, the packaging engages multiple senses and establishes a direct connection between the product, the material and the user. Visual identity, texture and scent together create an experience that reflects the product’s origin.

The project demonstrates how design can move beyond aesthetics and functionality to become a tool for encouraging more sustainable habits. It proposes a different view of packaging – not as a disposable object, but as the beginning of a new life cycle.

Author

Lara Malus is an undergraduate Media Design student at the University North. Her work explores how visual communication can encourage dialogue around socially sensitive subjects and shape the ways in which everyday life is perceived.

She is particularly interested in issues that are often overlooked or insufficiently examined. Through design, she seeks to offer a critical perspective, create space for conversation and encourage viewers to reflect actively.

Her approach combines strong conceptual thinking with clear visual communication. Rather than providing definitive answers, her projects raise questions that open up different perspectives and encourage creative reflection on social challenges. She views design as a means of fostering empathy, critical thinking and positive social change.
