The musical album “For the Greatest and Little Things” by Wladigerof Brothers combines jazz and Balkan melodies. It includes the composition “Rachenitza”, named after the traditional Bulgarian dance of the same name. The composition is exceptionally complex and demanding to perform, while remaining highly lively and danceable. The album cover design for this composition explores and visually interprets the duality between the emotional experience of listening and the technical complexity of the music.
The project is based on the idea of expressing the layered nature of music as an experience through an object that preserves its physical form – a vinyl record. The use of two different materials, creating not only a visual but also a tactile experience, stems directly from this layered musical experience. Fabric, covered with appliquéd shapes of similar forms but different patterns, represents the playfulness and dynamism the composition evokes in the listener, while the geometrically complex wire structure reflects the demands of its performance.
Through careful execution, the project successfully fulfils its function of storing the record, while also creating visual and tactile intrigue and communicating the musical character of “Rachenitza” to the audience without producing a single sound.
