Future Sound of Sevdah, Mavi Kan

Project

The album Future Sound of Sevdah by Mavi Kan visually and conceptually reflects the band’s musical poetics, rooted in a fusion of tradition and contemporary expression. Just as their music reinterprets Bosnian sevdah through jazz, pop, and contemporary production approaches, the LP design is conceived as a layered collage of different styles and periods.

The central motif is a black-and-white photograph of singer Sakina Modronja and violinist Bruno Urlić. The image is fragmented into linear segments and broken into smaller rectangles that fall apart and reassemble into a unified whole. This process mirrors the way Mavi Kan deconstructs sevdah into its core emotions and reconstructs it in a new, contemporary musical language. The visual thus symbolises a reinterpretation of tradition while preserving its authenticity.

The band’s name, which means “blue blood” in Turkish, is interpreted through thin blue rectangles placed over the black-and-white collage. These resemble hand-drawn pixels and symbolise a vision of the future – digital, shifted, yet still deeply emotional. In this context, the colour blue becomes a sign of distinction, elegance, and contemporaneity.

Founded in Zagreb in 2003, Mavi Kan brings together the musical traditions of Bosnia, Turkey, and the Middle East with modern genres. The visual identity of Future Sound of Sevdah conveys the same spirit as the music itself – timeless, emotional, and future-oriented.
