Art & Design

Under this title, the author examines the relationship between ART and DESIGN in both their creative and visible forms — or, conversely, Design as Art. In a PowerPoint presentation comprising 120 images and four videos, he traces a path from the cave paintings of Altamira to Kazimir Malevich’s *Black Square on a White Ground*.

After graduating in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, he radically changed his outlook, abandoned easel painting and devoted himself to design — a decision that ultimately shaped him as an author and creative practitioner. Drawing on half a century of experience, he explores the question of how much art there is in design, and how much design there is in art.

The fact that the lecture takes place at the very institution where he spent four years training as a painter — only to later leave that path behind — gives the subject particular significance. Guided by the principle of “Responsibility for Space and Time!”, he defines design as change: “Design is change; if it is not change, it is not design.” This approach has led to significant achievements in his creative practice, recognised in Croatia and even more widely internationally.
