“Relay” is an interactive sound installation in which visitors pass a message through a chain of spoken translation between Serbian, Hungarian and English. The message travels from participant to participant through successive translations, while a transcript of each step is printed live on thermal paper and gradually accumulates in the space as a physical trace of the process.

The transcription is generated using the faster-whisper model, while a custom typographic system records pauses, hesitations and repeated words. In this way, losses, shifts and uncertainties produced through translation become visible rather than remaining hidden.

The project explores how changing language alters both the content and emotional tone of a message, treating loss in translation as design material rather than as an error to be corrected. Through direct participation, visitors physically experience the distance between languages and the ways in which meaning transforms as it is passed on.

“Relay” addresses audiences interested in experimental design, language and identity, while its participatory format also makes the work accessible to visitors with no prior knowledge of the subject.
