The installation „Micelijska mreža” (Mycelial Network) visualises mycelial threads invisible to the naked eye, translating them into textures derived from research into mycelium composites – materials grown from the vegetative part of fungi on agricultural waste, or substrate, such as sawdust or straw.

The installation aims to present mycelium composites as materials with a distinctive aesthetic, rich textures and a strongly organic character. The panels range from velvety white surfaces to pale yellow tones and rougher substrate textures permeated by an almost invisible mycelial network, creating a compelling visual and tactile experience.

As grown materials, mycelium composites depend on a range of factors – including the fungal species, substrate, temperature, humidity, growth duration and overall growing conditions – resulting in a wide spectrum of colours, textures and finishes. The installation uses identical wall panels which, through variations in composition and material treatment, reveal the richness of diversity that can emerge from the same basic principles.

Beyond their aesthetic qualities, the project also invites reflection on other properties of mycelium composites, including biodegradability, compostability, thermal and acoustic insulation, and their ability to take on both simple and complex forms.

The project is the result of interdisciplinary collaboration, laboratory work, hands-on design research and learning through trial and error. At the same time, it represents a relinquishing of total design control and an acceptance of the mycelial network as a co-creator, in line with more-than-human design principles.
