Illusion box

Project

Project “Illusion Box” is a wooden storage box with a lid, designed as a cube measuring 40 × 40 × 40 cm. Its surface is covered with 36 turned elements derived from three different types of solids of revolution, which interweave to form a strong geometric pattern.

These decorative elements create an optical illusion: at first glance, it is not immediately apparent that the object conceals a relatively large storage space. At the same time, they also serve a functional role, forming both the lid handle and the structural components of the box’s legs.

The project explores the relationship between ornament, structure and utility, combining visual complexity with clearly defined practical qualities. Several variations of the box were developed, each retaining the object’s distinctive character, based on rhythm, volume and optical play.

Laszlo Tompa’s artistic practice focuses on the relationship between mathematics and visual art, exploring how complex geometric systems and mathematical structures can be translated into tangible spatial forms.

His earlier work in ceramic design examined surface structures, tiling systems and geometric planar grids. This research led to a fundamental formal question: how can three-dimensional forms be constructed from the simplest solids of revolution while creating a coherent and continuous surface?

This line of enquiry resulted in the “Illusion Box” project, a cube-based object clad in turned elements. The project subsequently developed into a series of formal experiments investigating continuous surfaces and the spatial transformation of geometric solids, providing the foundation for further sculptural works.
