The “DOMAĆE” project explores the Balkan dowry as an original infrastructure of hospitality: a domestic kit, locally crafted and built to last. It translates this logic to modern gatherings around the table. Curator Dorothee Sarah Spehar (DS AGENCY, Pola Pola) sources textiles for the project from vintage shops across Croatia, some untouched, some reworked, mixing them with pieces from contemporary fashion designers working across the Balkans, where possible. Heritage and new interpretation stand side by side, and it is precisely this “friction” that is key. The materials are a legacy transformed into circularity. The installation re-imagines the dowry through three parts: decorated jars and bottles filled with traditional preserves, tableware (tablecloths, placemats, napkins, and bread covers) and everything else needed for hosting, from aprons to small gifts for guests. The food is real, sourced from named small producers, including the curator’s family near Zagreb, sellers from Dolac and regional producers, with each listed alongside the piece it complements. Textiles and food, two supply chains from one region, carry the same “friction” and resilience as a good Balkan gathering. On one evening, the still life comes alive as a vibrant event, and the dowry is used as intended. This event is optional, depending on whether Zagreb Design Week can facilitate such a format. The project addresses an audience from the fields of design, gastronomy, and craft, and everyone who builds community around the table.
